Healthy skin makes for the perfect blank canvas. Whether you keep things au natural, or you like to wear makeup, having healthy skin will affect how your makeup turns out. Keeping a daily skin regimen is important regardless of where you’re at in your life. Sometimes young people think because they’re young and have all of the collagen, they don’t need to have a good regimen in place. On the contrary, if you start healthy habits when you’re young, then you’ll be able to carry your healthy skin into your later years.

Some people might think that a healthy skincare regimen involves cleanser and anti-wrinkle cream. And while those things are important, this blog will focus on what you ‘going the extra mile’ to promote healthy skin.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps contribute to the formation of collagen. Without ample amounts of Vitamin C, amino acids can’t form collagen proteins. You can increase the following foods to boost your Vitamin C, such as: oranges, kiwi, bell pepper, dark leafy vegetables such as broccoli and sprouts, and tomatoes.

Antioxidants

Healthy skin cells are made up of two electrons, but damaged cells only have one, these damaged cells are referred to as “free radicals”. What happens is that free radicals will attach themselves to healthy skin cells, leaving the healthy skin cells damaged. When this happens, enzymes in the skin break down collagen. You can naturally increase antioxidants by eating berries such as blueberries, drinking green tea will increase antioxidants, and foods that are high in lutein, such as spinach and kale. Additionally, you can find skin creams that have antioxidants included.

Protect Against the Sun

After this gloomy winter we’ve had, we understand the desire to head outdoors now that it’s beginning to warm up. That being said, be sure to take the appropriate precautions before heading outdoors. After properly cleansing your face and applying moisturizer, be sure to add sunscreen to your skin. Remember that even if the sun is not shining, harmful UV rays can still prematurely age your skin through overcast clouds.

Microneedling

What is microneedling you may be asking yourself. Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries to the skin in order to aid in the production of collagen and elastin. The skin’s repair process results in a thicker epidermis with a softer appearance of wrinkles, improvement of skin tone, pore size, and acne scars. Fuel Salon and Spa has an in-house registered nurse, Dana Kilthau, to offer microneedling.

If you take these additional steps and add them to your existing skincare regimen, we think you’ll see a difference. While we understand that the microneedling will not be an addition to your daily regimen, the rest of these steps certainly are achievable on a daily basis. Let us know if you need any guidance to your specific regimen.
